Traditional Mayan Cooking Stoves : Many impoverished Mayan families traditionally cook on open fires in their homes, causing serious health problems for the entire family, but particularly for women and their children. Mothers and their children can suffer severe burns from these open fire stoves.
Between February 5th and 21st, 2009, a group of 23 volunteers associated with the Guatemala Stove Project assisted local masons and families build 33 new masonry stoves. This site portrays the volunteers and the environment they worked in.

Erika Seidenbusch, an 18 year old form Perth, was on the trip and kept a blog of her experiences while she was away. She has some great stories and pictures to share at: www.mytb.org/WhereIsErika

Dedication of the Sam Clarke School in Panimaquim and trip to Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan : A School is being built in Panimaquim, close to Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan, and is dedicated to commemorate Sam Clarke, the son of Tom Clarke and Rita Redner, coordinators of the Guatemala Stove Project. Sam accompanied Tom and Rita many times in their trips, loved the people of Guatemala and was strongly dedicated to the cause of the Guatemala Stove Project. The Sam Clarke School was promoted by the Asociacion de Mujeres Ixchel. The Dedication ceremony was very moving. Two doctors and a nurse were on hand in the group of volunteers to provide medical services in the temporary school. Volunteers relished the opportunity to play soccer and frisbee with the school children. Many parents and children gladly posed for a portrait.
